Product / Service Conformity

Product safety for manufacturers

There are numerous technical and legal requirements for safety, design, packaging and insurance, to ensure products are safe and fit for purpose.

Good design and manufacturing processes are essential to ensure you meet these technical and legal requirements. They can also give your business a competitive edge and save costs.

Certification marks provide assurance that a product conforms to applicable standards, and that there is a program of ongoing factory inspections.

In most markets, conformity to local requirements is mandatory before products can be sold.  It can also serve as  a powerful marketing tool that helps build confidence throughout distribution and end-user channel

Some of the global product marks and certification are:

Another area of Product Responsibility is the care needed in dealing with substances / minerals / natural resources

MSDS

MSDS is material safety data sheet, and is part of OSHA's Hazard Communication. By following 16-section MSDS  recommended format, the information of greatest concern to workers is featured at the beginning of the data sheet, including information on chemical composition and first aid measures. More technical information that addresses topics such as the physical and chemical properties of the material and toxicological data appears later in the document. While some of this information (such as ecological information) is not required by the inplant use, the 16-section MSDS is becoming the international norm.

RoHS

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive 2002/95/EC, RoHS, short for Directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment

REACH

REACH is the Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. It entered into force on 1st June 2007. It streamlines and improves the former legislative framework on chemicals of the European Union (EU).

Conflict Minerals

This is United States specific requirement, for items sourced by a US consumer applicable throughout supply chain in other teritories too. But a few other countries too acknowledge this restriction.

What is conflict mineral? If you manufacture products that have any of the 4 minerals (tin, gold, tantalum, tungsten) in them, and you are a publicly traded company, you have actions as a result of the Conflict Minerals section of the Dodd-Frank Act (US Teritory). These actions range from completion of new form SD to due diligence and completion of an audited Conflict Minerals Report.

Of course, like RoHS and REACH and any number of other regulations, you may not be subject to the regulations specifically, but you will be involved in supply chain actions. Your customers will want information about the conflict minerals status of the parts they buy, you’ll probably be involved is someone’s due diligence, you may be required to identify DRC Conflict Mineral parts, and other supply chain considerations.

Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT)

C-TPAT - Supply Chain security management systems

At the moment we are studying C-TPAT requirements and will provide services to our clients who are part of Supply Chain Requiring this compliance
However a Management System Can be built around ISO 28000 to create a robust Supply Chain Security Management Systams

We understand, SGS  provides an introduction to the development, implementation and operation of a Supply Chain Security Management System (SCSMS) based on ISO 28000. An SCSMS compliant with the requirements of ISO 28000 helps you examine and control an organization’s supply chain security risks and threats at all stages, including the transportation of goods along the supply chain. This allows you to focus resources and efforts on the areas of high-risk concern and demonstrate security as a managed and accountable process to stakeholders.

On training completion you will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of ISO 28000:2007
  • Describe the requirements of ISO 28000:2007
  • Explain the relationship between the clauses of ISO 28000: 2007
  • Understand how to use ISO 28000 for the continual improvement of SCSMS

The training is an introduction for anyone involved in the development, implementation and management of an SCSMS based on ISO 28000. If you plan to complete other SCSMS training, such as Internal Auditor and the Lead Auditor Training, you will receive during this course the knowledge and understanding of ISO 28000 upon which to build auditing skills.

The training comprises lectures and workshop exercises.

Participants are not expected to possess knowledge of information security management systems or ISO 28000 before attending the course.

Inspection & Testing

Non-destructive testing (NDT) methods are used for detection, location and sizing of surface and internal defects (in welds, castings, forging, composite materials, concrete and many more).
Various NDT methods are also used in preventive maintenance (nuclear power plants, aircraft, bridges, etc.).
NDT methods are essential to the inspection of raw materials and semi-finished products. They are applied to finished products and to in-service inspection, as well as for the design and development of new products and for plant life assessment studies.
Thus NDT technology contributes significantly to the protection of life, public health and the environment through assurance of the quality and integrity of critical equipment and facilities. It is especially important  where the consequences of failure may be particularly severe, resulting in social, financial and environmental impacts.
