Stakeholder engagement is integral to any organization’s business. The organization comes into daily contact with external stakeholders, whether it be in the community, state and government offices or internal stakeholders like investors, employees, service providers. Key stakeholders influence and impact an organization’s policy development, the nature of work and outside perspectives of the organization.
Stakeholder engagement has recently been increasingly identified as key to business success both within private and government sectors. There are an increasing number of proven methods on how to appropriately engage with stakeholders.
Stakeholder: any individual or group who has a vested interest in the outcome of an organization’s activities.
Key stakeholder: any stakeholder with significant influence on or significantly impacted by an organization’s activities, and where these interests and influence must be recognized if the work is to be successful.
Clients: people who use an organization’s products and services. Clients are included in an organization’s key stakeholder template as a major category of stakeholders.
Stakeholders can be defined by one or more of the categories simultaneously.
Some industries or industry groups such as supply chain are key stakeholders. In some instances an individual or a group such as employees will be a key stakeholder.
Principles should underpin your stakeholder engagement. They can be used in planning new activity, or as a template to review current or previous efforts. There is a definitive split between strategic and operational principles.
Strategic refers to a higher level understanding and structuring of stakeholder engagement and involves identifying stakeholders, significant issues and expectations. While operational principles concern the action of dealing with stakeholders, for instance the stakeholder engagement plan and consultation.
The following standard should help in understanding this principle
Strategic and operational principles have been drawn from the Stakeholder Engagement Standard (AA1000SES) – Institute of Social and Ethical Accountability
