KCDS - Key Characteristics Designation System
Key Characteristics Designation System (KCDS) is a process of identifying parts and assemblies requiring additional control.
Additional controls can be of automated detection to manual checking in the assembly or manufacturing process to ensure that requirements are met and / or variations are minimized.
- Indirect or random checks
- Double visual inspection ( also referred to as firewall inspection, filter point control etc.)
- Visual inspection
- Charting methods, such as control charts, pre control charts, monitoring run charts
- Variable gauging or GO/ NO GO gauging performed on 100 % of the part/assembly after part/assembly have left the station
- Error detection in subsequent operations ,
- Gauging performed on setup and first piece check ( for setup causes only)
- Error detection in-station, and the system Cannot accept discrepant part/ assembly
- Error detection in subsequent operations by multiple layers of acceptance: The same characteristics is checked in subsequent fixtures, gauging and other installations or verification gauges that cannot accept discrepant part/ assembly
- Error detection in-station (automatic gauging with automatic stop feature).Cannot pass the discrepant part
- Discrepant parts cannot be made because item has been error-proofed by process/product design
